Tyler and Marie first met in middle/high school in Pennsylvania. They had drama class together and were paired as partners to do scenes. Marie, at the time, had a little crush on Tyler and sent him a carnation one Valentine’s Day but never signed her name. You can’t tell a guy you actually like him. Yuck! He never found out.
Marie would move to North Carolina, Illinois and then back to Pennsylvania. Tyler would just miss her ending up in Chicago shortly after she left and finally they landed the same state at the same time.
One chilly October evening, after grad school class and working two jobs, Marie called Christina McLay asking to come over. She said, “Sure! As long as you don’t mind that we have Tyler Yeager here.” Marie and Tyler hadn’t spoken to or seen one another in over ten years!
Frazzled and tired Marie charged through the door of Christina’s house and according to Tyler, “time stopped.” A few weeks later Tyler asked about a certain flower from years ago. And the rest is history!
Christmas of 2021 was one of the busiest we’ve had since the start of the pandemic. We hosted special guests, travelers on their way home, wrapped a million gifts and cooked a huge feast.
Marie loves the holidays and every year has a tradition of dressing the most “over the top” after competing in an ugly sweater contest one year with her brothers. This Christmas was no exception, she decked herself out in the gaudiest Christmas light gear. She expected nothing more or less than a good meal, gift opening, time with loved ones and then a giant sleep.
Marie’s family has a tradition of singing The 12 Days of Christmas after dinner every year on Christmas Eve. We assign attendees each a day of Christmas to sing while she plays the piano. Tyler conveniently got assigned “5 golden rings”. This year was probably the most sloppy run through of the song we’ve ever sang because it was late, wine was consumed and lyrics are hard after a long day. Marie was getting a little irritated sitting at the piano by the last round because of everyone messing up their lines. We got to Tyler’s part. He was seated behind her and it went a little something like this...
Marie: (plays big dramatic chord)
Tyler: ONEEEEEEEE (fishes for ring in his pocket)
Marie: (in irritation) FIVE (How do you mess up five golden rings??? But ok, continues playing)
Tyler: DIAMOND
Marie: (still irritated not getting it) Golden?
Tyler: RING!!!! (Kneels behind Marie)
Marie: (Turns around, ready to reprimand Tyler for his errors, cue complete shock)
She was so stunned and surprised! And in true music teacher fashion, finished the song, making Tyler wait four days of Christmas, before ultimately saying YES!
It’s been a long time coming and we can't wait to start building our lives together. We are so excited to share our special day with all of you!
